Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations 19th August 2024Case name: 2024_08_19-CM300
Situation: 45 travellers in distress in the Central Med, picked up by the Tunisian coastguard and returned to Tunisia.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Monday the 19th of August 2024 just before midnight, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 45 travellers, including three children and five women, two of them pregnant, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sfax, Tunisia, in the early morning of the 16th of August on an iron boat. We were not able to reach the travellers and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. The following afternoon we succeeded in reaching the travellers who were still at sea. They were adrift and exhausted and needed urgent rescue. In a second call we managed to get their GPS position and immediately relayed this to the authorities. As time passed, the situation onboard deteriorated and the travellers reported that several people lost consciousness, including the pregnant women. We relayed updated positions to the authorities as often as possible. Later, we learned that the travellers had been found by the Tunisian coastguard and returned to Tunisia.
