Summary of the Case: In the morning of the 8th of April, a relative alerted the Alarmphone shift team to a boat in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The boat has started in the evening of the 7th of April from Sfax. They were 53 people, including four women, on a nine meter Zodiac rubber boat with one motor. At first, the shift team did not manage to reach the travellers, but immediately relayed all the information to the relevant authorities. On the evening of the 8th of April, the shift team managed to reach the travellers: they reported to have been intercepted and arrested by the Tunisian coast guard the day before.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
