Situation: 47 travellers in distress in the Central Med, probably intercepted by the Tunisian coastguard.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Thursday the 13th of June 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 47 travellers, including two women, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sfax just after midnight on the 10th of June. We were not able to reach them and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Despite many attempts, we remained unable to establish contact to the boat. In the evening of the 15th of June the relative managed to reach the people on the boat. According to the relative the engine had broken and the travellers had started drinking sea water as they had no more food and drinking water. Many people onboard were very sick. We received their position from the relative and relayed it to the authorities. Probably, the travellers were eventually intercepted by the Tunisian coastguard. However, we were not able to get a direct confirmation of this.
