Summary of the case: On Friday the 15th of March 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 57 travellers, including 15 women, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sfax, Tunisia, just after midnight the same day on a rubber boat. We were not able to reach the travellers and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Despite many attempts, we remained unable to reach the travellers throughout the day. Later, we learned from the relative that they had returned to Sfax.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
