Summary of the case: On Thursday the 18th of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 10 travellers, including one pregnant woman, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Annaba, Algeria, the same morning and were heading towards Sardinia on a blue wooden boat. We were not able to establish direct contact with the boat and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We forwarded updates from the relative to the authorities as often as possible. The following day we managed to reach the travellers who told us that they had reached Sardinia by themselves and that everyone was alright.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
