Summary of the case: On Saturday the 6th of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of seven travellers, all men, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from El Kala, Algeria, the morning before on a white rubber boat. They were heading towards Sardinia. We were not able to reach the travellers, and the relative had last spoken to them the evening before where they reported that they were 15 km from Sardinia. We immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. A few days later, we learned from the relative that the travellers had arrived to Sardinia.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
