Summary of the case: On Saturday the 8th of June 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 13 travellers, all men, in distress in the Western Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Skikda, Algeria, the day before on a blue and white rubber boat. We were not able to reach the travellers and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We remained unable to reach the boat. Later, we learned from a relative that the travellers had arrived safely to Cagliari, Sardinia.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
