Summary of the Case: In the first hours of the 9th of April 2024, a relative alerted the Alarmphone shift team to a boat in distress in the Central Mediterranean. The boat had started on the 8th of April from Sfax in Tunisia. There were 38 people on the boat, including 20 men, 14 women and 3 children. At first, the shift team did not manage to reach the travellers but immediately relayed all the information to the Italian and Maltese authorities. In the afternoon of the same day, the shift team managed to reach the travellers. They reported that another boat had helped them on their last miles and that like this they had been able to complete their journey and had arrived to Lampedusa.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
