Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 30th of January 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 45 travellers, including men, women and a child, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Zuwara on a blue wooden boat. According to the travellers, the weather conditions were bad and they had run out of drinking water. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and forwarded their updated positions to the authorities as frequently as possible. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the Italian coastguard and brought to Lampedusa.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
