Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 4th of October 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 20 travellers in distress in the Alboran Sea. The travellers had left from Al Hoceima at around 09.00 CEST the same morning on a green wooden boat, heading towards Motril. We were not able to reach the travellers but immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information we had. However, Salvamento Maritimo told us that they would not commence a search and rescue operation if we were not able to provide more information. The following day in the afternoon we learned from the relative that the travellers had made it back to Morocco on their own.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
