Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 7th July 2024
Case name: 2024_07_07-WM016
Situation: One traveller attempting to swim to Ceuta, probably rescued by Salvamento Maritimo.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean

Summary of the case: On Saturday the 6th of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to one person in distress in the Western Mediterranean Sea. The relative told us that the traveller had attempted to swim from the Moroccan town Fnideq towards Ceuta, but that there were no news from him for the past 12 hours. The person had left from the beach without bringing his phone, so it was not possible to contact him. We immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo to the situation. They confirmed to us that they had rescued one person trying to swim to Ceuta, but could not confirm with certainty if this was the same person we had been alerted to.
