Summary of the Case: On July 2, 2022, the Alarm Phone was contacted by concerned relatives about a boat in distress with 56 travelers, including 2 women and 1 child, who had departed earlier that day near Laayoune, Morocco. We were not able to establish contact with the boat. We notified the Spanish search and rescue authority Salvamento Marítimo (SM) and while monitoring the case, believed a rescue by SM was underway. This was confirmed by MRCC Rabat later in the evening and was corroborated by additional information by local activists and by SM.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
