Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea
Summary: On Tuesday the 12th of October 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team received a direct call from a group of 56 travellers, 42 men, 12 women and two children, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left from Laayoune the previous day on a white rubber boat, heading towards the Canary Islands. They told us that they were cold and were lacking food and water. Their engine was still working and they were continuing their journey. We managed to get the GPS position from the travellers, and at 20.16 CEST we called the Spanish search and rescue orgnaisation Salvamento Maritimo on Las Palmas and forwarded all the information we had. Salvamento Maritimo informed us that they had already spotted the boat with one of their aircrafts and were organising a rescue operation for the boat. At 21.32 CEST we spoke to the travellers again and received their updated GPS position. We immediately passed this on the Salvamento Maritimo, who told us that their rescue vessel was underway to reach the travellers. At 22.48 CEST Salvamento Maritimo told us that they had rescued the boat and that the travellers had all safely embarked their vessel. Two hours later, they confirmed that the rescue operation had successfully been completed.
