Situation: 62 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Ocean, rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to Fuerteventura.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea
Summary of the case: On Saturday the 28th of May 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team received a direct call from a group of 62 travellers, including 17 women and a baby, in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The travellers had left from Laayoune around 02.00 CEST the same morning on a white rubber boat. They told us that many of the people onboard were sick and that they had no food or drinking water left and were all exhausted. We managed to get their GPS position and relayed all the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, who soon after confirmed that they had commenced a search and rescue operation. We stayed in contact with the travellers and relayed their updated positions to Salvamento Maritimo. At 19.19 CEST the travellers told us that they could see the aircraft of Salvamento Maritimo. We encouraged them to stay calm and prepare for the rescue operation. After this, we were no longer able to reach the travellers. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued and brought to Fuerteventura.
