Situation: 58 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Sea, rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to Fuerteventura.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea
Summary: On Friday the 14th of January 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 58 travellers, including 12 women and three children, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left from Laayoune the same day in the early hours of the morning, heading towards the Canary Islands. We managed to reach the travellers and get their GPS position, which we forwarded together with all other information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. Online, we could see that one of the aircrafts belonging to Salvamento Maritimo was close to the location we received from the travellers. Salvamento Maritimo confirmed to us on the phone that they had localised the boat and were conducting a search and rescue operation. We stayed in touch with the travellers and instructed them to stay calm until rescue arrived. In the late evening, Salvamento Maritimo confirmed to us that they had rescued the travellers who would be brought to Fuerteventura.
