Summary of Case In the early evening of October 10th Alarm Phone was called by a group of 14 women, two children and 38 men in distress who had departed Laayoune in a wooden boat. The caller related the group’s GPS position and we alerted authorities at 18.24 CET. The Spanish Search and Rescue organisation Salvamento Marítimo (SM) Las Palmas informed us they would send a helicopter to search for the boat. We remained in touch with the group of people in distress throughout the evening and forwarded their updated GPS positions to authorities. SM Las Palmas confirmed the rescue at 22.48 CET and informed us the travellers would be brought to Las Palmas.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
