Summary of the case: On Monday the 2nd of May 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 12 people, five men, four women and three children, in distress in the Western Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Oran the previous morning, heading towards mainland Spain. We were not able to reach the travellers directly, but relayed all the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. Over the following days it was not possible to match the boat we had been alerted to with any rescue carried out by Salvamento Maritimo, but we were informed that the travellers arrived to mainland Spain by themselves.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
