Summary of the Case: In the evening of the 15th of April, a group of travellers alerted the Alarm Phone shift team to their distress situation in the Western Mediterranean Sea. The group consisted of 16 travellers, including 1 woman and two sick babies, and had departed from Mostaganem, Algeria, in a zodiac in the early morning of the same day. When the travellers alerted the shift team, the engine had stopped working and they were not in sight of land. During the night, the shift team tried to find the exact position of the group and the Spanish search and rescue organisation set out to find the travellers. Eventually, the shift team learned that the travellers had arrived safely on land.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
