Situation: 59 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Sea, rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to Gran Canaria.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea
Summary: On Monday the 10th of January 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 59 travellers, including 20 women and two children, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left from around Laayoune just after midnight the same day on a rubber boat, heading towards the Canary Islands. We were not able to reach the travellers, but immediately relayed the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. They told us that they had just localised a boat matching this description south of Fuerteventura, and that they had sent an asset to conduct the rescue operation. They described that the rubber boat was in a bad condition but that all travellers were still onboard. Shortly after, the relative informed us that the travellers had just spotted the helicopter of Salvamento Maritimo. Salvamento Maritimo confirmed to us that they would bring the travellers to Gran Canaria. In the evening, the relative confirmed to us that the travellers had been rescued and were all safe onboard the rescue vessel of Salvamento Maritimo.
