Situation: Around 56 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Sea, 12 survivors found and 18 bodies recovered after the boat shipwrecked. Many travellers are still missing.

Summary of the case: On Monday the 9th of May 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of around 56 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left from south of Laayoune in the early hours of the morning on the 8th of May. We were not able to reach the travellers directly, but relayed all the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo as well as the Moroccan rescue authorities. Later in the day we learned that the boat had shipwrecked. The Moroccan navy had found 12 survivors, and in addition they had recovered 18 bodies. They continued searching for those missing at sea. Our thoughts and deepest solidarity are with the friends and families of those who died and remain missing after this tragedy, as well as with the 12 survivors who had to endure this traumatic experience.
