Summary of the case: On Monday the 12th of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 59 travellers, including three woman and a child, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Laayoune on a rubber boat, heading towards Fuerteventura. We were not able to establish direct contact to the boat and did not know their exact location. Online we could see that the wind was strong in the area, adding further danger to their journey. We immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by Salvamento Maritimo.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
