Situation: 37 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Sea, rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to Gran Canaria
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea
Summary: On Thursday the 14th of October 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 37 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left of the 11th of October at around 06.00 CEST on two wooden boats from Laayoune, heading towards the Canary Islands. We were not able to establish direct contact to the travellers, but forwarded all the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. In the late evening we found media articles talking about the arrival of a boat that could match the description we had been given by the relative, which had been rescued to Gran Canaria. Later on, we received a confirmation from Salvamento Maritimo about the resucue of a boat matching the description we had given, as well as from the relative who told us that the travellers had arrived safely to the Canary Islands.
