Situation: 58 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Sea, intercepted by the Moroccan navy.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea.
Summary: On Friday the 17th of December 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 58 travellers, including eight women and three children, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left from Laayoune the previous evening, heading towards the Canary Islands. The relative told us that water was entering the boat and that the situation was urgent. We immediately relayed all information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo via phone and email. At 16.25 CET Salvamento Maritimo told us that they had searched the area around the position we had provided, but that they had not found a boat. The following day we learned from the relative that the travellers had been intercepted by the Moroccan navy and brought back. This was later confirmed by Salvamento Maritimo who had seen the operation from one of their aircrafts.
