Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 11th February 2022Case name: 2022_02_11-ATL031
Situation: 55 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Sea, probably rescued by Salvamento Maritimo.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea
Summary: On Friday the 11th of February 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 55 travellers, 38 men, 14 women and three children, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left from around Laayoune the previous evening, heading towards the Canary Islands on a rubber boat. We were not able to reach the travellers directly or establish exactly where they were, but we forwarded the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. Salvamento Maritimo confirmed that they were coordinating a search and rescue operation for this boat. In the evening, Salvamento Maritimo confirmed to us on the phone that they had rescued a boat matching the description we had given them. We were never able to reach the travellers, but assume that they were rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to Arguineguin.
