Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 17th September 2021

Case name: 2021_09_17WM710

Situation: 19 travellers in distress in the Western Med, possible rescued by the Spanish Guardia Civil.

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean

Summary: On Friday the 17ht of September 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 19 travellers, including a six months old baby, in distress on their way from Algeria to Spain. The travellers had left from Oran the previous evening on a white fiber glass boat. The relative told us that the engine on the boat had broken down and the travellers were thus left adrift. We were not able to reach the travellers directly but got the GPS position of the last time their relative had been in contact with the boat. We were told that at this time they could see the Spanish shore. We immediately forwarded all the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. Throughout the night and the following day we continuously tried to reach the travellers without success. We learned that the Guardia Civil had rescued a boat that could match the one we were alerted to, but due to lack of information we were never able to establish with certainty what had happened to the travellers.

  • Border police patrols

While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33). • Exclusive Economic Zone

Maritime area beyond and adjacent to the territorial sea in which the coastal state exercises sovereign rights for the purposes of exploring and exploiting, conserving and managing the natural resources, whether living or non-living, the seabed and its subsoil and the superjacent waters. Its breadth is 200 nautical miles from the straight baselines from which the territorial sea is measured (UNCLOS, Arts. 55, 56 and 57). • Frontex operations

Frontex has, in the past few years, carried out several sea operations at the maritime borders of the EU. The blue shapes indicate the approximate extend of these operations. Data source: Migreurop Altas.
