Case name: 2021_09_30-WM738

Situation: 17 people departed Mostaganem, rescued to Almería by Salvamento Marítimo

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean

Summary of Case: In the early afternoon of September 30th Alarm Phone received a call by a relative who alerted us to a group of 15-17 people in distress who had departed from Mostaganem, Algeria, some two days previously. The relative had been without news since the departure. We forwarded the alert to authorities at 12.44 CEST. At 18.15 CEST the Spanish Search and Rescue organisation Salvamento Marítimo (SM) of Almería and Cartagena both confirmed a search and rescue operation was underway. In the evening we found a tweet by Héroes del Mar, informing of the rescue of 17 Algerians who had been adrift for four days. We informed the relative who alerted us of the distress case.

  • Frontex operations

Frontex has, in the past few years, carried out several sea operations at the maritime borders of the EU. The blue shapes indicate the approximate extend of these operations. Data source: Migreurop Altas.
