Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea
Summary In the evening of Thursday the 21st of October 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 42 travellers, including eight women and two babies, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left from Tarfaya the same morning at around 04.00 CEST, heading towards the Canary Islands. The relative passed on the GPS position of the travellers from earlier in the afternoon, and we relayed all information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. At 22.39 CEST we finally managed to reach the travellers who told us that there was strong wind and several travellers were sick. They were worried about the two babies onboard. We also got their updated position which we immediately forwarded to the relevant authorities. At 01.00 CEST the travellers told us that they had run out of fuel. At 01.55 CEST Salvamento Maritimo confirmed that they had rescued the travellers.
