Case name: 2022_08_31-ATL096

Situation: 51 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Ocean, intercepted by the Moroccan navy.

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Atlantic Ocean

Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 31st of August 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 51 travellers, including nine women and two children, in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The travellers had left from Akhfennir the previous day in the early hours of the morning on a red and black rubber boat. We were not able to reach the travellers, but alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo to the distress situation. In the late afternoon the Spanish Guardia Civil told us, that there had been no rescue to Spain by a boat matching the description we had provided. We called the Moroccan rescue authorities, who informed us that they had intercepted two boats and were engaged in more ongoing operations but could not provide further details. On the following evening we learn from the relative that the travellers had been intercepted by the Moroccan navy in the early hours of this day.
