Summary of the case:
On Sunday the 30th of May 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a boat in distress in the Atlantic. The boat was carrying 35 people: 15 women, 17 men and three babies. They had left from Laayoune at 01.00 CEST the day before and weather in the region had become bad. At 11.21 CEST we alerted the Moroccan rescue authorities via phone. The Rabat operator called back 10 minutes later. He informed us that a boat with 38ppl including 3 babies and 15 women was intercepted close to the coast of Laayoune yesterday at 18.30 local time.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
