Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea
Summary of the case: On Sunday the 10th of April 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of around 49 travellers, including two woman and two children, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left from around Laayoune the previous evening on a rubber boat heading towards the Canary Islands. The relative told us that the boat was taking in water and gave us the last known position of the boat. We immediately relayed all the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. At 10.28 CEST we finally managed to reach the travellers. They told us that they had no food, and not enough life vests and gave us their updated GPS position. After this, we stayed in contact with the travellers and forwarded their GPS positions to Salvamento Maritimo when possible. In the early afternoon Salvamento Maritimo confirmed that they had rescued the travellers.
