Situation: 61 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Sea, intercepted by the Moroccan navy.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea.
Summary: On Tuesday the 23rd of November 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 61 travellers, including nine women and two children, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left from Laayoune the previous morning at around 03.00 CET. The relative told us that they had lost contact to the boat, and our shift team was also not able to establish a direct contact to the travellers. At 16.12 CET we alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, forwarding all the information we had about the distress case.
In the evening, we learned from the relative that the boat had been intercepted by the Moroccan navy and that all the travellers had been brought back.
