Summary of case: On Friday the 1st of January 2021 around noon, the Alarm Phone shift team was contacted by a relative alerting us to a group of 95 travellers who had left from Zawiya on the 30th of December between 21.00 and 22.00 CET. Neither the relative nor our shift team were able to establish contact to the travellers. However, we were able to recharge their phone credit online, allowing them to make calls from the boat. At 12.15 we send an email to the so-called Libyan coastguard and the NGO Pilotes Volontaires with all the information we had. At 13.50 the relative informed us that the travellers had been intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard. However, we were not able to obtain a confirmation from the so-called Libyan coastguard regarding this.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
