Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 21st of December 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was called by a boat in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. Onboard were 62 travellers, including a child and seven women of which one was pregnant. The travellers had left from Zawiya on a rubber boat the same morning, and were panicking as the boat had started losing air. We managed to get the GPS position of the travellers and immediately forwarded all information we had to the relevant rescue authorities. After this, we were no longer able to reach the travellers, but later in the day we found out that they had been rescued by the NGO rescue vessel Geo Barents.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
