Summary of the Case: Around 3.30 pm CEST of Saturday the 17th of August the Alarm Phone was alerted to a group of travellers stranded on Charafinas island. From a twitter post we learned that they were 49 travellers including three pregnant women, three infants and one asthmatic person. Our shift team immediately tried to establish contact with the travellers but without success. At 4.15 pm we called the Spanish coastguard. They told us that they were already aware of the case and could not share any information. 40 minutes later we were informed that the travellers were with the Spanish coastguard and were being brought to Melilla. We called the Spanish coastguard ourselves and they confirmed this information.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
