Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 4th of October 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 20 travellers in distress in the Alboran Sea. The travellers had left from around Nador at 03.00 CEST the previous morning on a fishing vessel. We immediately relayed the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo and the Moroccan rescue authorities. The Moroccan authorities confirmed that they would launch a search and rescue operation. Later, we learned that the Moroccan navy had intercepted the travellers.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
