Summary of the Case:

On Saturday 28th of September at 05:50pm CEST our shift team was called by a group of approx. 40 travelers in distress 3km away from the shore of Lampedusa. They had left from Libya. At 06:14pm we informed the Italian Coastguard and passed them the GPS coordinates and the phone number from the boat. We also sent the information by e-mail.
From then on, we tried to keep in touch with the travelers, but the connection was bad, and we could not understand well about their situation. At 08:31pm we received the confirmation of their rescue from the Port Authorities of Lampedusa. This was another example of more migrant boats starting from Libya and arriving on their own at Lampedusa.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
