Case name: 2021_09_15-CM563

Situation: 25 travellers in distress in the Central Med, arrived to Lampedusa on their own.

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean

Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 15th of September 2021 in the early hours of the morning, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 25 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Zuwara at 23.00 CEST on the 13th of September on a blue fiber glass boat. Only 15 of the travellers were equipped with life vests. They had no more fuel left and were therefore adrift. The relative sent us the GPS position of the travellers, showing that they were close to the Italian island Lampedusa. They also forwarded the satellite phone number of the boat, but we were not able to establish a direct contact to the travellers.
We immediately alerted all relevant rescue authorities via email, forwarding all the information we had. At 03.19 CEST the relative forwarded a position of the travellers showing that they were only around 7 km from Lampedusa. We immediately updated the responsible coastguard.
At 04.00 CEST the relative informed us that the travellers had made it to Lampedusa on their own and that they were all safe.

  • Border police patrols

While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33). • Exclusive Economic Zone

Maritime area beyond and adjacent to the territorial sea in which the coastal state exercises sovereign rights for the purposes of exploring and exploiting, conserving and managing the natural resources, whether living or non-living, the seabed and its subsoil and the superjacent waters. Its breadth is 200 nautical miles from the straight baselines from which the territorial sea is measured (UNCLOS, Arts. 55, 56 and 57). • Frontex operations

Frontex has, in the past few years, carried out several sea operations at the maritime borders of the EU. The blue shapes indicate the approximate extend of these operations. Data source: Migreurop Altas.
