Summary of the Case: At 01:43h in the very early morning of Wednesday the 25th of August, the Alarm Phone was alerted by a worried relative of one of the travellers to a boat in distress carrying 25 travellers. The boat had departed the previous night from Zuwara. The motor had stopped and they had no fuel left. The relative also gave us the boat’s GPS position. A few minutes later the travellers called us directly confirming their state of urgent distress. At 02:10h our shift team alerted the Italian and Maltese coastguards via email. After, 02:28h we completely lost contact with the travellers. It was only at 14:52h in the afternoon that we received the information that a boat matching our case had arrived in Lampedusa, carrying 25 travellers including 3 children.

Border police patrols
