130 migrants reported dead on anniversary of Lampedusa shipwreck

Rome (dpa) - Two shipwrecks off the coast of Libya are thought to have left about 130 migrants dead, an Italian refugees‘ rights group said Friday.

The report came during ongoing commemorations for the first year anniversary of a 2013 shipwreck near the Italian island of Lampedusa in which at least 366 migrants died.

The boats capsized only 5.5 kilometres from the coast between Garabuli and Tajura, the Italian Council of Refugees (CIR) said in a statement.

"It seems that the total number of passengers on the two boats was 250, and only 120 were rescued by the Libyan coast guard. Ten corpses were recovered. Searches by Libyan authorities are still ongoing," CIR added, saying it received the information from its Tripoli office.
