Summary of the case: On Sunday the 25th of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 15 travelers, including women and children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Libya the previous evening. According to the relative they had problems with the engine, and a four months old baby onboard was very sick. We got their GPS position from the relative and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. The relative managed to stay in contact with the travellers and received updated positions which we passed on to the authorities. Later, we learned from the relative that the travellers had arrived to Lampedusa.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
