Summary of the case: On Monday the 8th of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 55 travellers, including three women and a child, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Tajoura, Libya, at around midnight on the 7th of July on a fiberglass boat. The people told us that they had run out of fuel and food and that there were strong winds. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and passed on updates from the boat to the authorities. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the Italian coastguard.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
