Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 30th of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 30 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Tajoura, Libya, just after midnight on a fiberglass boat. They told us that they engine had broken and that the boat was taking in water. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and passed on information and updated positions from the boat to the authorities as often as possible. Later, we learned from a relative that the travellers had arrived to Lampedusa.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
