Summary of the Case: In the evening of the 8th of April, a boat in distress in the Central Mediterranean alerted the Alarmphone shift team about their situation. There were 36 men on a yellow wooden boat close to Lampedusa. They reported to not have fuel left and had therefore started drifting. The shift team relayed all the information to the Italian and Maltese authorities. The shift team tried to reach the travellers again but did not manage anymore. As their last position has already been close to Lampedusa we assume that the travellers have most likely arrived to Lampedusa.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
