Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 16th of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 59 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left in the early morning of the 15th of July. They told us that they had no more fuel left and no food. We were not able to get their GPS position, but they told us that they were around 6km from the shores of Lampedusa. We immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. The following day we learned that a boat matching the description they had given us had arrived to Lampedusa. Although we were no longer able to reach the travellers to obtain a direct confirmation, we assume that they arrived safely.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
