Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 20th of March 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 22 travellers, including eight children and three women, one of them pregnant, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sabratha the previous day on a white fiberglass boat. They told us that water was entering their boat. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. After this, we were no longer able to reach the travellers. Later, we learned from a relative that the travellers had arrived to Lampedusa.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
