Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 16th of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 21 travellers, including two injured people and disabled children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left the previous night on a fiberglass boat. They told us that water was entering their boat. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and passed on their updated positions as well as information about the situation onboard to the authorities as often as possible. As time passed, we could hear that the situation was deteriorating. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the NGO vessel Nadir. When Nadir arrived, the boat had sunk and all the people were in the water. The crew of Nadir managed to rescue all 21 people from the sea.

Border police patrols
