Situation: 65 travellers in distress in the Central Med, rescued and brought to Lampedusa.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Friday the 21st of June 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 65 travellers, including one minor, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Tagiura, Libya, at around 4am the same morning on a white fiberglass boat. They told us that they had run out of fuel. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We remained in contact with the travellers and passed on their updated positions to authorities as often as possible. On the phone we could hear that the situation deteriorated onboard as time passed and the boat took in more and more water. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued and brought to Lampedusa.
