Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 17th of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 37 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. They had left from Tripoli in the early hours of the morning and reported that they were surrounded by high waves. We got their GPS position from the relative and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Throughout the day, the relative sent us updated positions from the boat which we then forwarded to the authorities. In the evening, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the NGO vessel Ocean Viking.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
