Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 10th of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 32 travellers, including eight women and nine minors, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Tripoli in the early hours of the morning on a fiberglass boat. According to the relative they were about to run out of fuel. We received their GPS position from the relative and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We forwarded their updated positions to the authorities as often as possible. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the NGO vessel Life Support.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
