Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 16th of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of eight travellers, all men but including one minor, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. According to the relative they had already been at sea for two days and had now run out of fuel and were therefore left adrift. The relative gave us their GPS position and we immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the NGO vessel Sea Eye 4.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
